Before Elvis

Well Researched and Thought Provoking

If you are searching for the history of rock and roll, look no further. Before there was an Elvis Presley, there were talented black musicians, disc jockeys, and record executives paving the way for the birth of rock and roll music. Preston Lauterbach explores the influences on a young Presley and how became a fan of black culture.

This book will likely introduce you to key figures in the rock movement you aren’t familiar with. Did you know “That’s All Right,” recorded by Presley in 1954, was written and recorded by Blues singer Arthur Crudup in 1946? Elvis also recorded the smash hit “Hound Dog,” which was first recorded by R&B singer Big Mama Thornton.

Lauterbach’s research is meticulous. He offers the backstories of Junior Parker, Johnny Ace, the Newborn brothers, W. Herbert Brewster, gospel singer Lucie Campbell, and bluesman Howlin’ Wolf, all influences on the future King of Rock and Roll. The book explores Presley’s natural connection to black culture, and how he was perceived by it.

I found “Before Elvis” well researched and thought provoking. It was a refreshing and stimulating look back at the pioneers of rock and roll.
